Q1 in Europe:

Toyota has 0 cars in the top 10. The Yaris is at #11 (#12 last year), the brand new Corolla at #17 (#92 last year) and the RAV4 at #25 (#49 last year). I am mostly surprised by the success of the Rav4. I saw a new RAV4 yesterday, and it has grown to behemoth size. This tends to be a death sentence for a car without a premium badge, but not here apparently.

Additionally: C-HR at 33 and Aygo at #49. The rest of the Toyota lineup has not made the top 50.

Interesting, I am seeing a ton of new cars with no plates yet around here. It makes sense, the kind of jobs most Marin Country people have aren’t going to be affected too much so maybe they are grabbing some screaming deals.

better than India, where no cars were registered in April.

Yeah size wise the 4Runner is the new Land Cruiser and the Rav4 is the new 4Runner basically. You can’t get cheap LC here so it it doesn’t count.

Put it another way: in Europe, VAG has 4/10 and the   RNM Alliance, PSA and Ford have 2 each. And those sales figures dwarf Oz sales. And most on the Euro list are sold here as premium vehicles or no longer available...

How the heck did the Corolla jump up that many spots? I rented a 2020, and the only 2 differences from my 2010 were more room and more tech. I live in America, so I don’t know what’s different from the one you guys get.

The Yaris sold in Europe being made in France, its more or less considered as a “ local” car in France (the same for the Smart) helping it being the best selling non-french (excluding Dacia) car last year in 14th position (it sold about 10% more than the next best seller, the Polo ; the Golf was 21th).

I dont think i ever saw a RAV4 other than the first (and maybe second) generation, same for the new Corolla .

Well, for one, the previous gen Corolla was not offered in many European markets, and where it was sold it was sold as a sedan only. A compact sold as a sedan equals sales flop. See my link above: VW Golf at #1, VW Jetta (= Golf sedan) not even listed in the top 50.

In Europe, the new Corolla mostly replaced the Toyota Auris (Corolla iM in the US), which was available as a wagon and as a hatchback. Just like the new Corolla. So, it’s basically because of a name change.

Additionally, the new Corolla is a lot more attra ctive than the previous gen Corolla/Auris. It looks attractive for the first time since, well, the first time? It is actualy said to be good to drive as well, which is a first too.

BMW hardly dropped in % terms...

I wonder if other premium stuff was the same?

Audi & Mercedes were both a lot worse. BMW fared best of ze Germans.

Right. Maybe just an anomaly then. JLR are trying to find a way.

But not everywhere in Europe. Toyota are no 1 in Ireland for the first four months (which is actually three months this year...) and have increased their share from 10 to 12.5%. The Corolla is the biggest seller, both for Toyota and overall. The CHR and Yaris are 9 and 10.

The vast majority of Toyotas sold here are hybrid now, and in the case of the Corolla, CHR, Rav4 and Camry non hybrids are no longer available.

For one thing the Corolla namep late now includes what used to be called the Auris (the hatch version) so you’re bound to see an increase. Also, the Corolla was new last year.

In the Netherlands it’s quite similar. Well, not the sales numbers but the availability. The Camry is hybrid only and the Corolla, CHR, Rav4 don’t come with diesel any more. Which was an outragious idea only a few years ago. Non-hybrid gasoline versions are available, but the emissions taxes on those cars result in a rather small price difference with the hybrid, so not getting the hybrid makes little sense.
